For the Brochure series, Kirsty Tinkler is honing in on an area of interest in her ongoing conversation with architectural façade and ornament. Tinkler’s work references the historical language inherent in architectural features, subtly questioning the implications of its usage and its place in the continuity of the western identity and outlook. Her recent work has begun to concentrate on physical means of attaching and suspending as a way of accentuating the presence and addition of façade.
Using a variety of materials and forms, Fixing and Fastening will stage possibilities for attaching objects to each other and site, as well as allow an exploration into the ephemeral nature of time-based installations.
Kirsty Tinkler (b.1971 Australia) studied Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (2007- 09) and The National Art School, Sydney (1995-98). She spent her early career creating large sculptural installations, receiving emerging artists grants and honourable mentions in Sydney’s annual Sculpture by the Sea Exhibition. In 2004, she received a travel bursary to represent Australia at the ART/OMI International Artist’s Colony in New York and in the same year completed an outdoor work in Brooklyn. Tinkler has been resident in the UK for the past 7 years. She most recently participated in Aid & Abet’s inaugural exhibition, Small Scale Survival in Cambridge and been recipient of the Ip – Art Award 2011.
Responding to her architectural environments, her work has shifted from the clean lines of the new world, to the classicism of London. Her work references the historical language inherent in architectural features, subtly questioning the implications of its usage and its place in the continuity of the western identity and outlook.
